Dear Parents/Guardians,
On Friday, May 16, 2025 all students in grades 4-8 will be attending the Phoebe Gilman School Track and Field Day at Dr. Denison High School in Newmarket, as part of our physical education program. We have a rain date scheduled for Wednesday, June 4, but that would only be used as a very last resort.
At the Track and Field Day, we will be running the following track events; 100m, 200m, 400m and possibly 800m. Our field events will include; Triple Jump, Running Long Jump, Standing Long Jump and Shot Put or Ball Throw. High Jump and 1500m will be run at the school on a separate date and time.
Students and teachers will be walking to Denison immediately after morning attendance for the entire day. Students need to arrive on time for school as students will leave immediately at 8:30 am. A schedule will be explained to the students, during Phys. Ed., so they have a rough estimate of the times of their events. Based on your child’s performance and results, they may be chosen to represent Phoebe Gilman P.S. at the Area Track and Field Meet in June. Students will be placed in different heats and groups. Students who place 1st in their group/heat do not necessarily move on to the Area meet, it is based on top times and distances.
Students must bring lunch, snacks, water/juice, a hat, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing for the day (i.e. running shoes are a must, athletic wear, warm layered clothing, etc.). There will be items such as popcorn, cookies, Gatorade and freezies for sale for $1 or $2. Students are welcome to bring money to purchase these located outside of Denison. Students are not permitted to leave Denison property during the day and everyone must stay for lunch. They are only allowed to enter Denison to use the washrooms. Students are not allowed to go to the cafeteria or walk the hallways of the school. Students who do not follow these rules will be sent back to Phoebe Gilman. At the end of the afternoon, we will be walking back to Phoebe Gilman in time for the regular afternoon dismissal. Parents are welcome to come and cheer for students at the sidelines or bleachers; however, they are not allowed on the track and should not be speaking to staff running events. Parents should also follow the YRDSB Spectator Code of Conduct.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Good luck to all participants. We look forward to a great day together!
